Nick Hornby's screenplay, from Lynn Barber's memoir, tells the story of a bright 16-year-old English girl, in early-60's London, who comes under the spell of a charming man in his late 30's (Peter Sarsgaard). It is a smart, complicated coming-of-age film with a breakout performance by Carey Mulligan, directed with balance and sensitivity by Lone Scherfig.
